about

Out of the ashes of the breakup of one of Iowa City's best kept secrets, Molly Ringwald, members Jake Mathiesen and Dustin Hamnes decided on a change of musical directions, veering away from their Modest Mouse and At-the-Drive-In influence toward a folkier, pop-tinged, back porch aesthetic.

Specifically, Jake and Dustin wanted to write something they could show to their mothers. The result was Safe Words. Almost immediately, indie critic John Schlotfelt said the new band was "more inclined toward lo-fi, kitchen sink indie-pop with just enough shaggy-dog bite to stave off a sugar rush" and mentioned that in just a few weeks their track "S'weather" had gotten more play than anything he'd heard all year. That was early may 2011, and things were moving rather quickly.

Within a few months, Jake and Dustin had written all 11 songs that would make it to the album, Jake penning all lyrics and Dustin handling most of the arrangements. Jake contacted longtime friend Ryan Rehr who agreed to play drums, along with a friend Jeff Soenksen who would play bass. Rounding out the lineup for the live band was Alex Postel, who played lead guitar and had input on the album as they were writing it.

Ryan and Jeff learned the songs off the recordings to play live and they all started practicing in Ryan's apartment at the time on the corner of 2nd St and Main Ave in Clinton, Iowa. Before their breakup, Safe Words wrote five additional songs and played shows (mostly in Iowa City) over an 8 month span in 2011.

Despite its fairly rough form, Little Village got their hands on a copy of the recordings and named the album to its Top Ten Local Albums of 2011 (Thus Far) 19JUL2011 littlevillagemag.com/little-villages-top-ten-local-albums-of-2011-thus-far/, and there were talks of signing to a Des Moines record label, Mission Freak, which sadly did not come to fruition.

Jake, Dustin, and Alex continued to write and a few more songs were completed after the band split in late 2011, but Hollow Leg stands on its own as a remarkable document of a band who for a brief period of time rode an intense wave of momentum and achieved a high water mark artistically.

With the benefit of modern technology, the album has been remastered from the surviving (mono) recording, and is being reissued in 2021 on 180GRAM color vinyl as well as digitally.
